Women in Games, Cat Collective Partner to Further Intersectional Opportunities in Esports

In an ongoing effort to support intersectional representation in esports, Women in Games is pleased to announce a partnership with the Cat Collective, a community-oriented organisation focused on inclusivity in gaming.

Women in Games will help further the Cat Collective’s visibility goals, provide counsel and advocacy, and drive support and engagement for it.

“The Cat Collective’s goals are to bring visibility to our international women and LGBTQ+ players, and to give them what they need to succeed, whether that is in-game coaching, or teaching them how to run teams or manage server-wide events,” explains Emma Brown, Women in Games Ambassador and Founder of the Cat Collective. “We have a diverse collection of expertise to share, from CV editing to graphic design; ensuring transmission of many skills keeps our community agile. The Cat Collective are especially excited to help Women in Games grow its esports footprint, so we can help more women and LGBTQ+ players find a welcoming environment for learning and forming lasting friendships.”

The Cat Collective hosts four female, non-binary, and mixed teams—The Jetpack Cats, Catana, Fighting Lion and Hel’s Kittens—who scrim and play in grassroots Overwatch tournaments. Each is international in scope and participates regularly in community-level events. It is also expanding its roster of games and recruiting additional teams, players, coaches and esports talent.

“Women in Games is keen to support women and minorities in making esports more diverse,” says Marie-Claire Isaaman, CEO of Women in Games. “Low visibility for the few women already in the sector makes others believe that esports is not for them. We’d like to proactively help the industry cultivate more spaces where women and minorities can find their feet, and develop the skills necessary to compete in open tournaments, at the pro level if they desire. The Cat Collective has a proven ability to attract and grow talent sustainably; we welcome the chance to work with them.”

Women in Games is a non partisan, not-for-profit organisation founded in 2009, grown from grassroots to the leading global force on gender equality in the gaming business. It works to achieve full and lasting equity and parity throughout the gaming and esports industry pipelines and beyond. Its vision is of not only an industry, but a culture and community free of gender discrimination, where equality of opportunity, treatment and conditions empowers girls and women from all backgrounds to achieve full potential.
