IN CASE YOU MISSED IT…

The stories, articles and opinions that have caught the eye of the Women in Games team over the past month…
Our CEO Marie-Claire Isaaman recently contributed to a great article by SkyNews on ‘how women are changing the game as FIFA gets a rebrand to EA Sports FC’
And our Director of PR and Comms Lisa Carter was highlighted in a celebration of games trade publication MCV’s 25th anniversary. One of just a handful of women games journalists back in the ‘90s, Lisa helped to launch what was then a weekly magazine, going on to subsequently become its editor, managing editor and publisher
Indeed, Women in Games has been something of a media darling recently, with our Manifesto also notching up the column inches. You can read some of the coverage of our launch here.
Elsewhere in the games industry, Pocketgamer.biz highlighted research by Sensor Data which revealed that games favoured by women are expected to exceed $16 billion in revenue this year
Another study, this time by Samsung, has revealed that game developers aren’t catering for gamers with disabilities, reports The Independent. We’ve featured an article elsewhere about the Spanish games trade body AEVI publishing a White Paper on creating accessible games. You can find it here [LINK]
Verge reports on EE’s launch of a gaming and esports training programme for women
Outside of games, you can read our coverage of Girlguiding’s Attitudes survey (which makes for difficult reading) here. And the BBC has also recently published a poll of teenagers which reveals that many feel unsafe and anxious, although are, thankfully, positive for the future
Sexual abuse and harassment of women and girls is sadly never seemingly out of the news currently…
Women in the UK’s NHS are being sexually assaulted – even while operating on patients – revealed the BBC, along with many other news outlets…
And Channel 4 has broadcast a Dispatches investigation into comedian Russell Brand’s treatment of women…
… an issue that Canadian comedian Kathryn Ryan alluded to during an interview with Louis Theroux last year. And Huffington Post highlights the ‘pushback’ she received after calling out the ‘predator’
It’s issues like these, says the Guardian, that means fighting misogyny is part of parenting in its brilliant article ‘Eat your broccoli and don’t listen to Andrew Tate’
Outside of parenting and into the kitchen, new research from the British Social Attitudes survey has revealed what many of us already know – that women are still doing most of the housework. In fact, according to an article by Stylist on the report, 65% of women say that they are most likely to do the washing and ironing, 43% are mainly doing the household shopping and 54% say they are more likely to cook dinner and do the household cleaning…
Finally, here’s one happy home, though: Britain’s first co-housing community exclusively for women over 50. “The women who started this were adamant that they didn’t want to sit in a day-room singing Daisy Daisy and Pack Up Your Troubles for the rest of their lives,” explains Maria Brenton, UK Cohousing Network’s senior ambassador who was instrumental in setting up the community.
