THE INDUSTRY IS TALKING ABOUT UNIONISATION. IT’S TIME TO UNDERSTAND IT

Women in Games to Host Industry Discussion on Unionisation in Games
Free virtual Monthly Social Gathering will explore what unionisation means for games professionals and studios alike – Wednesday July 8th, 4pm-6pm BST
Unionisation has become one of the most talked-about topics in the games industry. From growing numbers of employees organising within studios to increasing media coverage of collective bargaining, workplace rights and industry culture, the conversation around unions is gathering pace across the UK and internationally.
Yet despite the volume of discussion, meaningful opportunities to explore the subject from different perspectives remain surprisingly rare.
To help address that, Women in Games is dedicating its next Monthly Social Gathering to an open, balanced discussion about unionisation, bringing together representatives from two UK unions.
Taking place virtually on Wednesday July 8th from 4pm to 6pm (BST), the free event will feature:
- Maria Torres-Quevedo, Prospect
- Eugenia Peruzzo, IWGB (Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain)
In two separate sessions, each of our speakers will examine what unionisation means for individuals working across the games industry, while also exploring how studios can work constructively alongside unions to create healthier, more productive workplaces.
While both unions are based in the UK, the session will provide valuable insights into unionisation for attendees around the world.
A conversation the industry needs
There is much discussion in the industry on employee wellbeing, sustainable working practices, career development and creating workplaces where everyone can thrive.
At the same time, in the UK the new Employment Rights Act is introducing significant changes to employment legislation, including measures that strengthen protections around trade union activity and place new responsibilities on employers. As these changes come into force, it is becoming increasingly important for both employees and studio leaders to understand how unions fit into the modern workplace.
Rather than focusing on headlines or misconceptions, this session aims to provide practical insight into how collaborative relationships between employers, employees and unions can benefit everyone involved.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear directly from union representatives, ask questions and gain a clearer understanding of how unions support individuals, while also learning why many organisations are choosing to engage constructively with unions as partners in building positive workplace cultures.
This session is designed to provide valuable perspectives for professionals across the games ecosystem.
