REPORTS OF HARASSMENT DURING A PARTY FOR WOMEN AT GDC: A STATEMENT FROM WOMEN IN GAMES
We are shocked and saddened to read reports about a GDC event that should have been all about celebrating women in the games industry – but which allegedly saw them instead being harassed by some of the men in attendance.
Women in Games rejects and condemns harassment of women in any form and in any situation. The allegations about the party, organised by WIGI (Women in Games International) and sponsored by Activision Blizzard, have been reported by TheGamer.com following statements on Twitter by some of the women in attendance.
We must also clarify that Women in Games was not the organisation behind the party. WIGI is in no way linked to our own Women in Games not-for-profit organisation based in the UK, we have not received a $1 million donation from Activision Blizzard, and we were not involved in the GDC party in question.
We welcome and embrace any organisation that encourages and promotes equality, diversity and inclusion of all under-represented groups in the games industry. However, we are moved to ensure that our own organisation and community is not unwittingly mistaken for being involved in this particular event.
